3 essays, 2 meetings, 1 talk – over the weekened June 26, 2006

This weekend was packed.
I was working on 3 essays that were all due on monday. One essay was a book review on The Present future by Reggie McNeal. Second essay was about my personal ministry philosophy about christian education. Third, was about the servant figure in Isaiah and its implications for church ministry. I haven’t had time to fool around with the wordpress settings, but I’ll start uploading my papers online. I feel a little self conscience about them (since I rushed through most… umm all of them), still it’ll be good to get some feedback from you once I get it online.
I had 2 meetings over the weekend – first one on sat was the first FX meeting. Will post the promo/websites on this blog when its up. The second meeting was at Will/Kim’s house on sunday for our church EMC meeting. I think we hashed out a lot of things and I’m happy we’re beginning to actively pray and discern where God is leading us, as oppose to just going on auto-pilot and managing church as we always do.
I gave a talk at Milliken Gospel Church speaking to high school (and a few university) students about ‘breaking the power of the past’. Man, it was a huge challenge. I think in preparing for the talk, I fully realize that the content was pretty heavy, and I wasn’t sure how they would react. On the other hand, I thought I would have a pretty good idea of the youth mindset based on my experience at my own church or at TC. Bad assumption. I am definitely not meant for youth ministry – I can begin to sense why youth ministers have a turnover rate of 2-3 years. In any case, I hope the youth in that church may grow in transparency and vulerability and reach out to each other in love.
Oh yeah, for sunday school – we did purposeful nothingness. How’s that for a weekened?
Knowing Jesus through the OT – part 5 June 20, 2006

The last chapter is entitled Jesus and his Old Testament values. Wright begins by analyzing how Jesus was tested in the wilderness. If Jesus was a person who was formed by the Hebrew Scriptures, then one can see special significance in his replies to the Devil when he draws from the first part of Deuteronomy. This was a passage from Moses calling the Israelites to uncompromising loyalty to God after forty years of testing in the wilderness. We can imagine the Son of God completely hungry and exhausted after forty days in the desert finding encouragement from Moses. ‘We see Jesus using his Hebrew Bible to define and affirm the whole orientation of his life towards God’ (p. 186). We see that these early chapters of Deuteronomy demonstrate a basic orientation that comes before details of the laws themselves. ‘God was concerned not about mere conformity to laws, but about the whole shape of a person and society, the inner drives of the heart, the direction of the walk of life’ (p. 186). The fourth chapter in Wright’s book is entitled Jesus and his Old Testament Mission. Wright begins by looking at the Jewish expectations at the time of Jesus and ‘the core of the hope was clear – Israel would be restored’ (p. 138). There was also a belief that the nations would become part of God’s people alongside Israel. In this setting came John the Baptist who ‘regarded his mission as one of winnowing and sifting the nation by his call to repentance so that they would be prepared for the coming purging and restoration’ (p. 141). John was preparing the way for restoration, and it was Jesus who would be sent to accomplish it. Wright then looks at the different identities conferred on Jesus. (more…)

Chapter three entitled ‘Jesus and his Old Testament Identity’ demonstrates that ‘the Old Testament provided the models, pictures and patterns by which Jesus understood his own essential identity and especially gave depth and color to his primary self-awareness as the Son of his father God’ (p. 135). The second chapter in this book is entitled ‘Jesus and the Old Testament Promise’. Wright continues to make his case about the importance of the Old Testament by first examining the five scenes from Jesus’ childhood:
- assurance to Joseph concerning the child conceived in Mary (Matt 1:18-25) compare to Isaiah 7:14
- Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Matt 2:1-12) compare to Micah 5:2
- Escape to Egypt and return from there (Matt 2:13-15) compare to Hosea 11:1
- murder by Herod of the boys in Bethlehem (Matt 2:16-18) compare to Jer 31:15
- settlement of Jesus' family in Nazareth (Matt 2:19-23) compare to variety of sources Matthew doesn't record here (interesting) (more…)

Growing up with the Flannelgraph June 14, 2006

Christianity has a unique medium they can call their own. I'm talking about the Flannelgraph. You know, the velvet-like material that you saw when you were a kid, and your sunday school teachers would stick on various pictures of Jesus, the apostles, and other wholesome characters from the bible.

Imagine a whole generation being brought up on this kind of teaching… whoa.

A CALL FOR HELP:
Nadine and Mike are getting married at the end of July and they asked me to do sound/music for their banquet. The sound part's easy, the music is not. I can pull off classic/jazz/oldies stuff that will be nice dinner/conversational/background music, but I have no idea what to play for the dance afterwards.
I mainly listen to jazz, oldies, christian, and more recently – the soundrack to Grey's Anatomy…. so I NEED HELP IN FINDING APPROPRIATE MUSIC.
I figure I need around 60 hip-hop/dance/rap songs to be safe. I have the slow jams covered. So far I have the following songs:
- Craig David – Can't be Messing 'Round
- Earth, Wind and Fire – Dancing in September
- John Legend feat. Lauryn Hill – So High Cloud 9 Remix
- Nelly Furtado – Promiscuous
- Pussycat Dolls – Beep
- Ciara – 1,2 Step
- Shakira – Hips don't Lie
- Black Eyed Peas – Let's get it Started
- Usher – Caught Up
- Usher – Yeah
- Destiny's Child – Lose your Breath
- Beyonce feat Jay-Z – Crazy in Love
- 112 – Peaches and Cream
- Tanto Metro & Devonte – Everyone Falls in Love
- Outkast – Hey Ya
So need help, ASAP! Please let me know the following:
1) any of these songs inappropriate?
2) what are your favorite clubbing/dancing songs?
thanks much
Campus Challenge – Journey towards Christ-Centered Community June 9, 2006

The following article (written by me) will be published in AFC's upcoming newsletter.
On a cool, long weekend in May, a little under two hundred students arrived at Trent University. These students are dressed in jeans, baby T’s, and hoodies emblazoned with their respective campus logos. Like first-year students during frosh week, most are wandering aimlessly around the campus until everyone is directed towards the main auditorium. The worship team warms up while students are hanging out in the seats, greeting old friends they haven’t seen in ages. Finally, one student steps up to the mic and greets everyone. The other students fall silent as he speaks:
“Sorry, we’re experiencing some technical difficulties. Let’s all move to the cafeteria for some group activities.”
Welcome to the wonderfully complex life that is University Ministry. A little snapshot of this ministry is Campus Challenge (CC), an equipping conference for mission-minded university students. Imagine planning a conference where students are the leaders-initiators (instead of us coveted staff workers, counselors, and pastors) and you might get the idea of the emerging culture on university campuses. I've been sitting on this video by Sarah McLachlan for quite some time. It's quite thought provoking and I believe it suggests that we need to undo how our consumer-driven culture must shape our media, our spending habits, and our living.
Here's the link on google video for World on Fire:
