Pedagogical Creed – part1 – Introduction
This paper seeks to describe my pedagogical creed – basically, what do I believe as a learner and a teacher. I will first outline my metaphysical (my understanding of reality), epistemological (my understanding of knowledge), and axiological (my understanding of value) framework which serves as the nature of my method. Second, I will describe my view of education. Third, I will describe my view of school. Fourth, I will describe the subject-matter of education. Fifth, I will offer an example on how I will apply my philosophy of education to my unique context.
I must explain at the forefront that at this moment in my life, I describe myself educationally as a theistic progressive liberationist. For now, I draw my deepest convictions about education from several educators: Thomas Aquinas and John Calvin (biblical theism), John Dewey (progressivism), and Paulo Freire (social reconstructionism). In my own language, I subscribe to an “educational eclecticism”, whereby I continually refine my pedagogy within the rich mosaic of historical and philosophical foundations of education.
